Why you should keep marketing when you are busy
It can be easy to let your marketing slip when you’re busy, but if you focus on marketing only during quieter periods, you may find your business running on a feast-or-famine cycle, which I think we can all agree is less than ideal!
If you would like your workload to feel more consistent, then ensuring your marketing stays consistent when you are busy is key!
You may naturally have peak times during the year when you know you are all hands on deck, and times when things feel slower. If this is you and you wait until those quieter times to start marketing efforts again you are not only left feeling like you are starting from scratch, your potential audience will as well.
Top 5 tips to help small businesses show up:
KISS (keep it simple and sustainable)
This is particularly relevant if you are someone who gets overwhelmed wearing all the hats in your business. Try to keep your marketing strategy simple and sustainable, especially if you are juggling multiple roles in your small business. Think about why you want to use marketing. Is it to keep brand awareness, build trust, increase followers, or keep sales ticking over? Maybe it is a mixture of all of these? Do you really need to show up on multiple platforms, or could you focus your time and energy on one?
Choose the right social media platforms
If you are a hotel brand, are you more likely to gain clients through a Facebook group, or will your potential clients be hanging out on TikTok and Instagram? If you are a plumber working in your local area, is it better to try to reach a wider audience or niche down to your local area?
Stay consistent with your marketing
Algorithms on social platforms change constantly and it can feel impossible to keep track. However, if, as an example, you focus on posting consistently, even just twice a week, you build brand awareness and trust with potential clients. Being consistent, therefore, can help improve trust in your brand, so it is a win-win!
Use a mix of digital marketing tools
Blogs, newsletters and webinars are powerful digital marketing tools for small businesses and can all have a valuable impact when they are planned and run properly. You may find that you have loads of initial blog ideas for your brand (great!) and decide to publish a blog every two weeks. However, you may find motivation wavering over time, or a lack of time being a concern when you are running at full capacity. So, if you decide on a manageable blog schedule (such as one a month), it gives you time to breathe and ensures the content you deliver is relevant.
Plan your marketing in advance
It may sound simple (remember to KISS!), but if you allow yourself some time each week or month to plan and create your content, then it means you won’t be playing catch-up.
You are doing all of the above and the leads are rolling in. Fantastic!
Now you find yourself unable to say yes to every inquiry.
Don’t panic! However, build yourself a wait list. Clients and projects can come and go, but if you have a list of warm leads gained through your marketing, then it can be much easier to fill those workload gaps.
