You don’t have to do it all

Running a small business often means wearing all the hats. In one morning you can be a marketer, administrator, bookkeeper, customer service team, operations manager… and realise that you have not had a chance to do any of the work that actually brings in the money.

It’s no wonder so many business owners feel stretched thin. But what often gets overlooked is the real cost of doing everything yourself, so not just in time, but in money, energy, and longer‑term growth.

You’re losing over half your week to tasks that aren’t your job

Research from Xero found that UK small business owners spend less than 46% of their week on the work they’re actually in business to do. Isn’t that scary! It has been shown that business owners don’t get to their core tasks until Wednesday at 2:36pm because the first half of the week is swallowed by admin, emails, finance, and operational tasks.

Imagine what your business could look like if you reclaimed even half of that time.

Doing everything yourself costs the average business £61,000 a year

This one is a shocker!

According to Xero’s (yes, them again!) 2024 research, small business owners lose £61,000 in potential revenue every year because they’re tied up doing non‑core work instead of income‑generating tasks. That’s a massive 12.5% of their total revenue gone.

Trying to “save money” by doing everything yourself often costs far more than outsourcing ever would.

Nearly half of business owners are burning out

A Simply Business survey found that 46% of small business owners have experienced burnout, with stress, admin overload, and lack of support being major contributors.

Burnout is no longer just seen as a wellbeing issue. We now know it affects decision‑making, creativity, and our ability to show up for clients. Put simply, no one wants to get to the burnout stage!

One‑third say they can’t grow because they’re too busy

In the same Simply Business research, 32% of small business owners said they can’t grow or scale because they’re too bogged down in day‑to‑day tasks.

Growth doesn’t stall because you’re not capable. It stalls because you’re doing too much.

The smallest businesses lose the most

According to Xero, Micro‑businesses (0–9 employees) lose double the productivity of larger SMEs, that’s 12.5% vs 6.39%,  because they have fewer people to share the load.

If you’re a solo business owner or small team, this hits even harder.

The mental load is the real hidden cost

Even when you’re not actively doing the tasks, you’re thinking about them:

  • remembering to reply whilst waiting for the kids to finish school

  • remembering to post whilst stood in the shower

  • remembering to invoice when doing a food shop

  • remembering to follow up when out with friends

  • remembering to update something “when you get a minute”

This constant mental juggling leads to decision fatigue, slower reactions, and reduced clarity.

It doesn’t mean that you are disorganised, but it does mean you’re overloaded.

What all of this means for you:

When every task flows through you, your business becomes dependent on one person , and that person is , frankly, probably exhausted.

This leads to:

  • missed opportunities

  • slower turnaround times

  • inconsistent marketing

  • forgotten admin

  • stalled projects

  • and that constant feeling of “I’m behind”

So what’s the alternative?

The good news is that you don’t need a full time employee to cover these tasks, and just as importantly, you don’t need to hand over everything. You just need support that meets you where you are.

Support might look like:

  • a few hours a month

  • help with marketing

  • someone to organise your systems

  • or a focused VA for the Day to clear the backlog and reset your business

The moment you stop doing everything yourself, you naturally create space for:

  • clarity

  • creativity

  • growth

  • and breathing room

And that’s where your business really starts to move.

If any of this has found you nodding your head and thinking, “Yes… this is me,” then it might be time to get some support. Also, recognise that you are not alone in experiencing this overwhelm.

My VA for the Day package is designed exactly for this. It’s a full, focused day dedicated to clearing the tasks that have been weighing you down. If you would like to enquire about availability or find out more, simply send me a message

Ultimately, remind yourself that you don’t have to do everything alone, and your business will thank you for it.
